1. She Wrote In Secret At First
Jane Austen started creating stories and plays in her teens. She began writing in the quiet of her family home, often in a small, secluded corner.
2. She Never Married
Despite her keen insight into marriage, Austen never married. She lived a quiet life in the English countryside, though she was reportedly engaged for one day and may have experienced heartbreak.
3. She Published Anonymously
Austen's first four novels were released “By a Lady,” meaning the world didn’t know who she was while she was alive. Her identity was eventually revealed by her brother.
4. She Had Little Formal Education
Jane Austen attended Reading Abbey Girls' School for about 18 months. The family had to pull her out because of financial difficulty, and she got most of her education from reading books.
5. Her Death Is Still A Mystery
Austen died of an undiagnosed illness at the age of 41. Her exact cause of death remains unknown to this day, but theories suggest tuberculosis, Addison's disease, or lymphoma.
