Even if you've never picked up a comic book in your life, there are certain characters in every form of media that transcend their medium. For comic books, it's these five superheroes that have turned their names into something far bigger than themselves. It's safe to say all of these characters are household names that everyone in your family would easily recognize. We'd be shocked if you didn't know any from this list!

1. Superman

The very definition of what it means to be a superhero, Superman is a household name and an iconic character you'd have to be living under a rock not to know. He even has his very own common saying, "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!" that is still said to this day! With his memorable red cape, blue suit, and large 'S' placed on his chest, this superhero is the source of inspiration for many who have come after him.

Made especially popular thanks to several hit movies, Batman isn't your typical superhero. Though he's just a human being with no superpowers, many kids grow up wishing to be him. With his iconic bat cowl, cape, and black suit as dark as night, this vigilante roams the streets of Gotham trying to fight for justice. It's a story everyone knows by heart.

3. Spider-Man

People may hate spiders, but when it comes to superheroes, Spider-Man often ranks at the top of everyone's list. This friendly neighborhood hero has won over everyone's hearts with his relatable personality, serving as an everyday Joe just trying to save the day with his amazing gifts. You can't help but want to learn more about his crazy, exciting adventures, and all the menacing villains that he faces.

4. Wonder Woman

A fierce fighter and compassionate hero, Wonder Woman truly set the bar for female superheroes in the comic book world. She has an amazing origin story that gives her complex layers, and she's easily a role model anyone can look up to. A third of the great trinity next to Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman definitely knows how to stand her ground, cementing her as one of the most beloved comic book characters of all time.

5. Captain America

Wearing the star-spangled banner and carrying an iconic starred shield, it's not surprising that Captain America is such a popular comic book character. For any American patriot, he's a symbolic character that is beloved thanks to his unwavering heroism, strength, and ability to be a solid leader. He's everything you want in a great superhero, and when he's played by Chris Evans in the live-action movies, you simply can't go wrong.
