5 Reasons Why People Hate Reading

Books Aren't for Everyone

If you’ve ever turned your nose up when someone told you their hobby was reading, you’re not alone. Plenty of people don’t enjoy books, whether it’s because they find them too long or simply don’t have the time to read. Sure, books can be interesting, but they’re not for everyone. Here are five common reasons why some people hate reading.

1. Lengthy Text

The average length of a novel is usually around 300 pages. If you're a seasoned reader, that might not sound like a lot, but to someone who doesn't read much, it can feel like an impossible amount of pages to get through (not to mention long paragraphs). Even if you set a goal to read 20 pages a day, it can still be overwhelming—and boring.

2. Lack of Time

Kids might have more free time to sneak in reading sessions, whether at school or at home, but adults rarely have this luxury. With days filled to the brim with schedules, appointments, work, and responsibilities, there's just no time to fit in reading.

3. Short Attention Span

Another reason why people might not like reading? They have a short attention span. They might be able to get through two pages, but after a while, the words just blur together, they can't remember the characters' names, and the plot seems boring or nonsensical. So, they toss the novel aside.

4. Choosing the Wrong Genre

Some people may also dislike reading because they haven't found their preferred genre yet. For example, if they're most interested in mystery but read romance novels, it can be harder to get into the groove because it's not a genre they care about.

5. Find TV Shows & Movies More Engaging

Some people may also just prefer action to words on paper. They think it's much more interesting to see things happening, to see characters come to life on screen, rather than reading about what they do in a book. Because of this, watching a TV series or film adaptation of a novel will always be their first choice.
